2006 Homecoming Report
This past Homecoming was held on Sunday, October 1, 2006 at the community center, better known as the old Baxter Schoolhouse.
Although the weather was in the lower 90-degree range, there was still a pretty good crowd, with 52 registered guests and an estimated 70-75 total in attendance. Most were regulars who come every year, but some third generations were also noticed enjoying themselves. This was the 37th annual Homecoming held at the old schoolhouse, however, the Homecoming itself goes back nearly 50 years.
Some of the family names you will recognize are Perkins, Morgan, Smith, Smiley, Neely, Corder, Miller, Richardson, Steel, Forester, Clark and several others. These are first-generation names and not necessarily their present names. As long as they keep having kids, perhaps the Homecoming will continue to exist. The sad part, however, is noticing the absence of faces of those who have gone on. Seems there's more and more of this each year.
Although the list of former students at Baxter grows shorter each year — the last school year was 1943 — a lot of recalling events and laughing at old events still goes on and a good time and shared fellowship is enjoyed by all.
The food that was brought was simply amazing! The meats, from boiled ham to Bar-B-Cue, to fried chicken, to meat loaf, to baked ham, and several other kinds. Vegetables ranged from pinto beans to home-canned green beans with potatoes, candied yams, potato salad, green salads, butterbeans with ham, and wonderful chicken and dumplings. Desserts of all kinds and good southern sweet iced tea were on a table to themselves.
On the business side, discussion was held on the possibility of moving Homecoming date to perhaps the last Sunday in October. Our weather pattern seems to be changing and we no longer have a spring or fall. By moving the date our hope is the weather will be cooler by the last Sunday. We'll take the matter up again next year and make a decision.
If you did not make it this year, try your very best to come next October.
